About Jill:
I am a California artist working in oil, acrylic, mixed media and encaustic. After working as a landscape designer for 25 years I returned to my first love, art.
My paintings often reflect the influence of my travels and exposure to different cultures. My close relationship with plants has developed into a love of botanic and geometric forms. I paint as a response to the natural world, our place in it, and our humanity. I create in layers as a way to express the unfolding of meaning in our daily lives.
My recent series, Ebb and Flow and Euclid’s Garden, both lent themselves well to encaustic, which is an excellent medium for hiding and revealing, adding and subtracting. Working with it is very tactile and I often work literally by feel, as I build layers and scrape them smooth, work oil stick pigments into cracks, crevices and marks with my fingers. The effect of flame and heat to fuse the many layers is an “alchemical” reaction that often surprises and delights me! I allow myself plenty of room for experimentation in pursuit of an authentic and personal vision.
Experiment, explore, play, problem solve, embrace the process…
About Encaustic:
Encaustic is an ancient wax-based medium which has enjoyed a revival since the mid-20th century. Modern encaustic is a versatile medium where pigment is used in a beeswax and resin base. Using a heated palette, layers of melted wax are laid down and fused with heat. It lends itself well to incising, layering, and collaging where various mixed media elements can be incorporated. The encaustic process uses no solvents, and does not need to be varnished or put under glass as it is impervious to moisture. Like all fine art, it should never be exposed to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.
